China\’s Baotou Steel Rare-Earth Corp 2009 profit declines

BEIJING, April 16 (Xinhua) — Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Rare-Earth (Group) Hi-Tech Corp said Friday its 2009 net profit declined 66.6 percent from a year earlier.

Net profit hit 55.8 million yuan (8.2 million U.S. dollars) last year on revenue of 2.6 billion yuan which was down 19.6 percent from 2008, according to its annual report filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Earnings per share fell 66.6 percent to 0.069 yuan in 2009.

The company attributed the declining revenue and profit to falling prices of rare earth-related products and shrinking demand amid the financial crisis.

In the statement, the company also expected the Chinese government to step up efforts to consolidate the rare earth sector and boost its efficiency.

China reports 630,000 cases of adverse drug reactions in 200

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) — China\’s adverse drug reaction (ADR) monitoring center received more than 630,000 reports of such cases in 2009, according to the State Food and Drug Administration(SFDA).

Of the total, some 94,000 are reports of new or severe adverse reactions, the SFDA said, without giving the number of ADR cases in the previous years for comparison.

ADR is an unwanted or negative consequence sometimes associated with the use of medications. China set up its ADR reporting system in 2001 to warn pharmaceutical factories, medical institutions and the society in a timely manner.

According to the SFDA, it revised the manuals for more than 10 kinds of drugs in 2009 to ensure reasonable and safe use

Since October 2008, China has recalled a series of herbal injections which might cause adverse reactions.

In March last year, China banned a pain-killing injection product following a report from the Guangdong Provincial Health Department saying that 13 patients reported symptoms of shivering and fever after taking the product with a brand name of Xiangdan.

Nickel loses momentum after April rally

?BEIJING, May 6 — Nickel may lose its steam after a rally in April as China\’s latest monetary measure to cool the economy and crack down on sizzling property market could slash demand for the metal.

The spot nickel price in Shanghai was down 6,250 yuan ($915), quoted between 180,000 yuan and 181,500 yuan on Wednesday, pulled down by the sharp decline in the metal overnight on the London Metals Exchange (LME).

LME nickel dipped more than 1 percent to an almost one-month low of $24,350 per ton on Tuesday.

The base metal has risen almost 15 percent in April on the back of falling stockpiles and increased output of stainless steel, becoming the best performer among commodities.

\”The market needs corrections after persistent big gains made earlier this year,\” said Liu Minda, a non-ferrous analyst at Huatai Securities, adding that China\’s policy tightening, which will cut demand for nickel, may weigh on the base metal\’s price.

The central government hiked the bank reserve requirement ratio by 50 basis points on Sunday, the third such increase this year, indicating the country\’s intention to cool the overheating economy.

China\’s gross domestic product (GDP) increased 11.9 percent in the first quarter, the highest growth rate in three years, surpassing most economists\’ estimates. The country\’s GDP growth in 2009 was 10.7 percent.

Recent moves to curb the realty market will also weaken demand for nickel-based stainless steel, analysts said.

Jinchuan Group Ltd, the largest producer of nickel in China, cut its factory price by 1,000 yuan to 185,000 yuan per ton on Wednesday.

China was one of the largest consumers of nickel in 2008, accounting for one-fifth of the total global consumption of 1 million tons.

In addition, nickel pig iron, which can replace the traditional electrolytic nickel in stainless steel, will drag down the price of the metal further as the substitute may cause a supply glut.

\”The exploitation of nickel pig iron will quickly increase stainless steel output, which may cause a possible imbalance between supply and demand,\” said Zhu Lida, a non-ferrous metal analyst from Northeast Securities based in Shanghai.

Reserves of nickel pig iron across the world are \”exponential higher\” than those of electrolytic nickel, Zhu said.

The analyst added that as nickel sulphide ore resources have been greatly depleted, nickel pig iron is becoming more attractive to miners.

Meanwhile, the huge profits from mining may also attract major global players to explore the metal further.

China\’s service sector totaled 13.134 trln yuan in 2008

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) — China revised the added value of its service sector in 2008 to 13.134 trillion yuan from the previous 12.0487 trillion yuan, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Friday.

The sector has grown 26.4 percent from its 2007 level, based on the 2007 NBS data according to the revision.

The sector accounted for 41.8 percent of the country\’s economy last year after the modification, said the NBS.

The revision came after China finished its second national economic census, which started in October last year to gather basic information of all industrial and service-sector entities active in 2008.

The census is conducted every five years and the latest one aimed to help form the basis of the social and economic development blueprint for the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015).

Argentina passion ignites Expo

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhuanet) — Tango, football, barbecue, and wine…Argentina is presenting the best of what the country has to offer for visitors at the Shanghai World Expo.

Not only can people experience the authentic culture, but the Argentina Pavilion is also celebrating the Bicentennial of the country\’s independence and sending up a tribute to the achievements of its people and cities.

These are the runners up of the 2010 World Tango Championship.

They show the charm of Tango two performances a day at the Argentina Pavilion. Their moves will be particularly sharp on Thursday, which marks the National Pavilion Day of Argentina.

And not only do the Argentine people have quick feet on stage, but they display that talent on the football pitch as well. The country has won two World Cup championships so far, one in 1930 and another in 1978. And now they are hoping for a third trophy this year with Diego Maradona as head coach, leading a team that includes Lionel Messi, 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year.

Where does all the passion and energy in Argentina come from? No doubt, one of the sources is the food. And the star on the menu is barbecue.

Argentina is one of the world\’s major beef producers. And according to 2009 statistics, each average Argentinean consumes 54 kilograms of beef per year. In some years, that number can reach 120 kilograms. So, of course, all of the beef, as well as the wine served at the Argentina Pavilion is flown in… direct from Argentina.

The move follows a decision of the European Union, Kiryanov said.

\”There are some questions because we don\’t have enough bed ground for drivers to have a rest,\” he said.
